Cheer teams set sights on Las Vegas competition

Two Grand Mesa Cheer teams traveled to Boulder for the Xtreme Battle Royale Cheerleading Competition Jan. 30.

The teams are coached by Kristine Weiszbrod and Stephanie Rapozo. Theresa Rankin is the tumbling coach.

Delta High School basketball teams played three games this past week. Basalt was in town last Tuesday, Feb. 9, and the Panthers' girls dialed up a 53-33 win over the Longhorns. The boys lost, 61-52, to the Longhorns.

Delta High School's wrestling team held a 15-point lead over Moffat County after the first day of competition in the 3A Region 4 tournament in Montrose. The Panthers, in fact, led up until the final match of the day between Olathe's Felix Pena and the Panthers' Logan Church in the 285-pound division.

Hotchkiss boys win key games; girls beat Caprock

The basketball teams from Hotchkiss High School will play their last games of the regular season tonight at Meeker.

The boys face a key matchup against the Cowboys as the Bulldogs are in the thick of the race for positioning in the 1A/2A Western Slope League.

Pipher leads eight Eagles to 2A tournament

The Paonia High School wrestling team is going back to the familiar confines of the Pepsi Center in Denver for this weekend's state championship tournament.

Last year the Eagles saw their record of three consecutive state team titles snapped by Rocky Ford, which enters this year's tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in 2A.

The annual Speech and Debate Speech Congress was held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at Paonia High School. Eight Western Slope schools and more than 45 students participated in the Congressional and Senate house debates.

A life turn to art

When Sue Jochum decided it was time to leave the corporate world of high technology and pursue her life-long passion for art, she chose the Surface Creek Valley as home to be near other family who live here.

Now, with her computer programming days behind her, she is finding the time to enjoy plein air painting sessions with friends, to participate with her work in shows and exhibitions, and to develop an enterprise in portrait painting, a discipline that she has discovered a natural talent for.

Delta County School District representatives heard a wide range of thoughts and ideas regarding the challenges the district faces during last week's information-gathering meetings held at the four district high schools. A few common themes emerged from the Hotchkiss and Paonia meetings, mainly focusing on retention of quality staff, declining enrollment, fiscal concerns, consolidation of schools, and above all, what is best for the students.

The Surface Creek community responded with enthusiasm to the third annual Crockpots for Critters fundraiser held at the Cedaredge Civic Center on Saturday.

As a result, the Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control's (FCAC) goal of a new main building for the Surface Creek Shelter came a step closer to becoming a reality Saturday.
