Youngsters compete in Rockies' Skills Challenge at Confluence Park fields

The 2016 Rockies' Skills Challenge was held on June 15 at Confluence Park. Boys and girls, ranging in age from 8 to 13, competed in running, hitting and throwing for a chance to advance to the next round of competition.

Competition was divided into 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12/13 age divisions.

Warren Robert Vollmert

Warren was born almost 89 years ago on his grandparents' cherry farm near Loveland, Colo., to Herman Otto and Dorothea (Reifschneider) Vollmert. He and younger brother Bernard grew up in Fort Morgan, where their family had little money during the Depression.

Float, festival get folks on river

In Hawaiian shirts and leis, nearly 130 people floated down the North Fork of the Gunnison River during the Western Slope Conservation Center's 16th annual River Float and Festival on Saturday, June 4. Floaters travelled from the Paonia River Park to the Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss.

They're everywhere! Scattered through the unmown field, along the ditch bank, and all along the edge of the highways -- Mountain Puffballs! The dandelion seed heads are so very small in comparison, for these are about four inches in diameter, much larger than the flowers that preceded them.
