Olathe park improvements planned

Olathe Elementary first graders did a science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) project this year as part of their problem-based learning curriculum.

They determined the Olathe Town Park needed some improvements, so they did some research (by walking to the park and observing) and followed with a presentation to a panel of people from town to explain their findings and make suggestions.

Paonia 2A baseball champs

The Paonia Eagles baseball team topped off a historic season at Hobbs Field in Pueblo Saturday, holding its opponents scoreless in state semifinal and final games to bring home the trophy and end the year with a perfect 25-0 record.

Head coach Nate Miller called the win a "huge redemption" after the Eagles suffered a heartbreaker 4-2 state semifinal loss to Limon last May.

VFW golf tourney played

Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3571 and its Auxiliary hosted their fifth annual golf tournament on Saturday, May 20, Armed Forces Day, at the Devil's Thumb Golf Course. All teams were awarded participation mugs and a delicious lunch prepared by the post and auxiliary members.

DMS students stage melodrama

Delta Middle School students recently performed a melodrama entitled "Dogsbreath Devereaux the Dastardly Doctor or Nurses! Foiled Again!" Directed by Dan Dunham, a DMS theater teacher, the cast of sixth graders made the audience "boo," "yay," and "hiss" at just the right times.

Over the past few weeks, Vision Charter Academy hosted two different student showcase and talent show events. Learners from the Delta, North Fork and Surface Creek campuses came out to celebrate their accomplishments together in a fun evening which included vocal performances, dance routines, piano compositions, gymnastics exhibitions, guitar solos and more.

When Scott Sullivan retired from his career at the Delta Correctional Center after 16 and a half years, art became a much bigger part of his life.

With new-found free time he now had for pursuing his passion, he completed construction of a studio behind his house just north of town in Cedaredge.

For the 2017 Crawford Pioneer Days celebration, the planning committee chose to honor the homestead and heritage families that built Crawford, families that have helped shape the community and the town in the past 100 years or so. Heritage families have been invited to ride in the parade, and the theme for the weekend is "Heritage, Family and Friends!"

Snow Capped ciders judged world class

Ciders from the local Snow Capped Cider brand have been awarded top honors at a prestigious major international competition.

The local ciders made from fruit grown in Surface Creek Valley took two of the top three places in their class with gold medals, and a third Snow Capped Cider won a silver medal at the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAP) held at Grand Rapids, Mich., on April 20-21.
