Rodriguez, Hatheway lead Hotchkiss runners

Hotchkiss senior cross country runner Sam Rodriguez had his best finish of his career Friday after placing second at the Ouray-Ridgway Ramble at the Reservoir. Rodriguez's 20 minutes, 54 seconds time was just over four seconds off the winning time of 19:56.11, run by Ouray junior Cooper Rondinelli.

Eckert students renew friendships

The Surface Creek school district once covered an area from the Gunnison River on the south to the upper crossing of Kaiser Creek on the north, and from Rogers Mesa on the east to Doughspoon Creek on the west. A Captain William Spalding taught the first school in the Eckert area at his home in 1884.

Senior Hikers take on the role of 'heroes'

Members of the Cedaredge Senior Hikers group on a river float outing last week ended up playing the role of heroes by rescuing a pair of tourists who had become stranded during their own Gunnison River outing.

Jude Kieca, a member of the Hikers' group, reported to the DCI that, "It turned out to be a exciting day as we rescued two doctors, one from New York and the other from New Mexico, who had wrapped their canoe around a rock.
