Beki Atchley led the Delta girls to place eighth at Hotchkiss with a time of 24 minutes, 48.66 seconds. It was Atchley's third consecutive top-10 finish at Hotchkiss. "I love this race," she said. "It's fun."
A senior, Atchley is a fourth-year cross country runner and three-time state qualifier in track. Asked what she likes about running, she replied that there are "so many things... I like the competition, I like feeling in shape, and I think it's just fun."
Saturday's race came at the end of a long week of battling a cold, she said. "I'm kind of recovering from that." Atchley said she was happy with her performance, with one exception. In the second mile, on the south-facing back stretch of the course where the heat rises, she lost a couple of places.
Her finish boosted the girls team to a fifth place finish, one point behind Rangely. Aubree Andre and Grace Hall placed 11th (25:53.53) and 12th (26:05.22), respectively; and Abby Williams and Hana Hollenbeck placed 20 and 21st.
"They're real troopers," said Atchley. "I'm really proud of them."
