Cedaredge's track team culminated a successful regular season with 16 boys and 13 girls qualified to attend this week's state track meet in Denver.
Last weekend's Bruin Invitational was a runaway win for Montrose's boys (219) with Cedaredge finishing second with 136 points.
Isaac Swoffer won two individual events and helped the Bruins' 800 meter relay team win that race as well.
Swoffer won the 200m dash (23.28) and is ranked eighth in Class 2A top 18 listings.
Ty Grant did not run the 200m race at the Bruin meet but is ranked second in the event in Class 2A with his 22.89 from the Gunnison meet on April 22. Swoffer also won the long jump competition (20-04.5).
The 800m relay team (Swoffer, Drew Markley, Brendon Klaseen and Grant) scorched the oval at Cedaredge in the last regular season meet with a time of 1:30.74 (good enough to place the Bruins first in Class 2A rankings for the event and break a school record set back in 2010). The Bruins will not have Klaseen in the race at state so that he may participate in his four (chosen) events, 400, 800, 3200 and 1600m relay races.
Grant was a part of the Bruins' 4x400 relay team which placed second and set new personal best marks for the team with a 3:28.93. That time also entrenched the team (including Brendon Klaseen, Jordan McMillan and Markley) atop Class 2A rankings with Wiggins' relay team nearly two seconds back in second place.
Cedaredge's 3200m relay team (McMillan, Andrew Richardson, Markley and Klaseen) won Saturday's race in Cedaredge with a time of 8:43.29 (well off the Class 2A second place time of 8:32.03).
Josh Jenkins, Sawyer Carey, Danny Mendoza and Wyatt Camp joined efforts in the 4x100 meter relay race to place third on Saturday with a time of 47.4. Their best time of the year (45.32) has the Bruins sitting at number six in Class 2A rankings for the race.
As if McMillan wasn't busy enough with relay work, he ran an open 800 and placed fourth in a time of 2:06.96. Klaseen also ran the open 800 and finished third in a time of 2:04.13.
Other third place finishes included Markley's 53.79 in the 400m dash, Patrick Walker's 140-6 throw in discus competition and Xander Purcell's 45-9 in shot put.
Danny Mendoza added a fourth place finish to his relay team work with a 12.05 in the 100m dash and Zach Ketelsen was fourth (18-8) in long jump. Camp was fourth in the 100m dash as well.
Earning fifth place points were Camp (100m dash), Zach Ketelsen (200m dash), Ryan Imhoff (400m dash) and Caleb Williams (3200m run). Williams also earned points for his seventh place finish in the 1600m run.
Sixth place points went to Tevin Keller (400m dash) and Josh Deal (high jump).
Sawyer Carey was seventh in long jump with Isaac Vader (3200m) and Jayce Cormier (shot put) picking up a point for their eighth place finishes.
Thanks to the efforts of state Rep. Millie Hamner, House District 61, Colorado State University plans to re-open the Rogers Mesa research site.
The facility was taken out of operation in 2011, due to budget cuts throughout the CSU system.
