David C. Hooker

Dave Hooker (Little Grandpa, Grandpa Hooker, Papa) passed away peacefully in his own home surrounded by his family on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with PSP.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 at Heritage Hall, Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss, Colo.

Dave was born on Jan. 9, 1948 to the late William C. and Alma Hooker in Denver, Colo. He attended school in Denver graduating from George Washington High School in 1966.

After graduation, Dave entered the United States Marine Corps from 1968 thru 1969, where he received the Naval Achievement Award. Dave served in Vietnam during his tour of duty. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Granby, Colo., where he began his childhood dream of being a rancher.

On June 20, 1970, Dave married Donna Roberts. In 1973, they moved to the Hotchkiss area. He worked for various ranches in the area, before managing Stirrup Bar Ranch of Maher, Colo., from 1976 until 1991 raising commercial and registered Herefords. In 1991, the Hookers bought their own place on Spurlin Mesa and Dave continued raising registered Herefords but gradually switched to commercial cattle.

He was involved in Cattleman's, Clipper and Grandview ditches as a board member and ditch rider, as well as being on the Crawford Water Conservancy Board.

Dave was a school bus driver in the Hotchkiss area until 2010. He was a member and Past Commander of the Lynch-Cotten American Legion Post #190 Crawford, Colo.

Dave enjoyed hard work, giving gifts, and making people laugh, his family and especially his grandkids.

Dave is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Lynelle Schreiner (Donny Rule), Becky (Randy) Moon, Will (Jen) Hooker and Shannan Schreiner; his grandchildren, Taylor and Jacob Schreiner, Lee and Hayden Moon, Bryson, Rielyn and Liam Hooker; his brother, Robin (Joyce) Hooker of Englewood, Colo.; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
