Delta's Panthers began the season with purpose against Thornton's Trojans Saturday afternoon. The Panthers pitched a shutout winning by a score of 42-0 over the 4A Pioneer League team, and in doing so established a new Delta High School victory standard for coach Ben Johnson and his staff.
The win signified Johnson's 67th win at Delta, with help from a combination of assistant coaches over the past 10 seasons (Johnson is entering his 10th year at Delta).
Delta compiled 324 yards of total offense to Thornton's 122 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Nolan Bynum lived up to his pre-season billing with four touchdown passes and ran for another in Delta's rout. The talented player had 44 yards on six rushes.
Bynum completed 12 of 16 passes for 204 yards last Saturday with junior Skyler Kraai hauling in four passes for 79 yards and three touchdowns in the game.
Junior Cody Suave ran for 48 yards on 10 carries and scored a touchdown for Delta with junior Ku Moo rushing 11 times for 28 yards.
Defensively, senior Aiden Barrios led the Panthers in tackles against the Trojans with eight tackles (five solo and three assists). Junior Gauge Lockhart, with seniors Caleb Miramontes and Aiden Barrios contributed six tackles each in the win.
Junior Hunter Hughes recorded a sack while sophomore Colton Johnson intercepted a pass and senior Kolby Keller and junior Nathan Workman deflected passes. Keller also caused one fumble in the game.
Delta's kicking game featured seven kickoffs with Felipe Bedoy sendting three of the seven kickoffs to Thornton's end zone for no returns.
Bedoy was also six for six in extra-point attempts for the Panthers.
Delta makes the trek over Monarch Pass to Salida for this week's gridiron matchup with the Spartans.
Friday night's kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
