Derelyse Roatcap O'Brien, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on April 3, 2018. She was born in Olathe, Colo., to Oscar and Alene Roatcap, both pioneers of Delta County. As a young child she grew up in a building next to the Egyptian Theater and lived in the back of the store that was a wholesale business supplying retailers with candy and tobacco products.
Derelyse went on to Mesa College where she met Gordon O'Brien. They were married for 64 years. They had four children, Kevin O'Brien (Angel), Kelly O'Brien, Kathi McCombs (John) and Terry O'Brien.
Derelyse was an Air Force wife following her husband on 17 moves. Derelyse and Gordon retired to the Western Slope and operated a ranch that her father purchased in 1943 along the Leroux Creek road area. She enjoyed supervising the men in her life building aspen log fence on the property. She knew exactly what logs should go where. No one argued with her.
In the winter months she was an avid reader. She had many favorite authors and had a great memory of the stories she read. Many of the books out of her collection have been donated to the local library.
Derelyse leaves behind seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, also a very close dear friend, Marian Smith of Glenwood Springs. A friendship that started in their college days back in 1947 that remained throughout her life.
Honoring her expressed wishes, her ashes were scattered upon her beloved mountain land.
