Dr. Charles Marvin Cox of Delta died Dec. 29, 2017, at his home. He was 85.
He was born in Delta on May 5, 1932, to Henry and Fern (Hotchkiss) Cox. He graduated from Delta High School in 1950, attended Western State College in Gunnison and then went on to earn a doctorate of dental surgery from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., in 1957. While at Creighton, he married Camilla Kenworthy on Aug. 1, 1953.
After graduation, he joined his uncle, Dr. Marvin A. Cox, in his dental practice in Delta. Six months later, he was drafted by the U.S. Air Force and served as a dentist for the next 30 years, retiring as a colonel.
During his time in the U.S. Air Force, he completed his post-graduate studies at the University of Alabama Dental School in Birmingham, Ala.; served as chief of
prosthodontics at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La.; directed the Area Dental Laboratory for the European Theater at the U.S. Air Force Hospital in Weisbaden, Germany; was appointed as a special consultant to the surgeon general for Europe; and returned to Barksdale AFB as director of Area Dental Laboratory.
He was a member of the American Dental Association, the American Prosthodontics Society and a charter member of the Federation of Prosthodontics Societies. From 1984-1991, he owned and operated an Apple computer store in Shreveport, La.
In 1991, Dr. Cox returned to Delta. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, sang in the choir and served in various positions on the parish council. He was also a fourth degree Knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 65 years. In addition, he was secretary and treasurer of the Delta Food Pantry.
He enjoyed performing in local theater groups, fly fishing and driving the tractor on his son's farm.
He is survived by his wife, Camilla; brother, Kenneth (Janet) of Grand Junction; sister-in-law, Kay of Cortez; aunt, Lucretia Cox of Delta; eight children, Cindy Simpson of Houston, Texas, Kevin (Yvonne) of Denver, Kelly (Stephanie) of Delta, Carla (John) Hauser of Shreveport, La., Celeste (Joe) Gardner of Vancleave, Miss., Kris (Rachel) of Grand Junction, Kerry of Shreveport, La., and Keith (Penny) of Albuquerque, N.M.; 24 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon; and son-in-law, Robert Simpson.
Rosary will be recited on Thursday, Jan. 4, at 6 p.m., and funeral Mass will be Friday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m., all at St. Michael Catholic Church in Delta.
