Dostadning is the new phenomenon outlined in Margareta Magnusson's "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning." In Europe, the book has already occupied a good deal of reviewing space and, according to Time magazine, dostadning will be the hot new trend stateside in 2018.
Magnusson's book chimes with the current anxiety about clutter in the 21st century. Dostadning advocates the proactive and mindful clearing out of possessions before death. The idea is that it saves relatives the onerous task of making decisions about what to keep and what to throw or give away. The book reflects the simple fact that we are all living longer lives. This results, of course, in more stuff.
A Little Help North Fork Valley is sponsoring a three-session book exploration based on Magnusson's book. Jill and Dave Knutson will lead three one-hour discussions to encourage you to start your own "dostadning." The first 10 A Little Help members to sign up will be given their own hardback copy of the book, free of charge. Other participants need to order the book or download an ebook in advance of the first session. Sessions will be held the last three Tuesdays in August at the community room in the Paonia Library from 3-4 p.m. Call ALH at 527-3482 to sign up.
The first session, Aug. 14, will cover the first half of the book up to the section on "The Kitchen." The second session on Aug. 21, will cover the remainder of the book. It is a short and delightful 128 pages. And finally, on Aug. 28, each participant will bring a box with the possessions they have decided to "declutter" from their lives! Anyone with interest is invited to join Jill and Dave for this exciting exploration.
