In an extremely close race for Cedaredge mayor in the April 5 municipal elections, former two-term trustee Gene Welch outpaced term-limited trustee Ray Hanson by a slim margin of 18 votes out of 530 cast to win a four-year term as mayor.
Welch got 274 votes or 51.7 percent to Hanson's 256 votes or 48.3 percent, according to unofficial results from the county elections department. The difference amounted to just 3.3 percent in the total vote count.
Welch told the DCI, "I want to thank the town for voting me in as mayor. I hope we can make some positive improvements and keep Cedaredge a great place to live."
Welch is a businessman who with his wife, Judy, has owned and operated the Tri-R Motel for 18 years. Before that, Welch had a career in the corporate world.
Hanson is a term-limited trustee who is finishing his second consecutive elected four-year term on the board. He told the DCI, "I knew it would be a close election either way, but it was closer than I thought it would be. Gene will make a very fine mayor for the town."
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
