In conjunction with Comfort for Critters, participants in the summer reading program at the Montrose Regional Library knit and sewed blankets and toys for the dogs and cats at the Delta animal shelter.

The theme of the summer reading program was "Build a Better World." To do that, adults and teens decided to take part in the Comfort for Critters program. While pets await adoption, handmade blankets provide a comfortable bed. When they are adopted, their blankets and toys go with them, providing something familiar as they adjust to their "forever family."

Montrose librarian Valerie McGlothlin delivered blankets in assorted sizes and materials to the Delta shelter on Friday. She said she enjoyed participating in the project herself, finding it a great way to use up small quantities of yarn and fabric. Everything is washable, she said, as she showed shelter employee Brandy Ware crocheted toys stuffed with fabric. Many of the items were completed using patterns from the Comfort for Critters website.

Donations of yarn are being sought to carry the project forward. McGlothlin specified worsted weight yarn like an acrylic. All materials must be washable. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter, 640 W. 4th Street, Delta.
