Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Post #3571 of Delta is teaming up with the Colorado Aviation Business Association's (CABA) Holiday Airlift again to assist needy and homeless veterans and their families in the area.
This is the seventh year that the VFW has worked with CABA to distribute food and toys to needy veterans. CABA-affiliated businesses collect non-perishable food and toys throughout the state. Donated aircraft and student pilots from the Metro State aviation program airlift these goods to locations throughout Colorado. Members of VFW posts in Delta and Montrose work together to help distribute an aircraft full of items airlifted into the Montrose airport.
These airlifted items are then added to donations connected locally by VFW members and distributed to needy or homeless veterans and their families in Delta and Montrose.
For the past two years, Dollar Tree in Delta has graciously offered to serve as a collection point for the project. Manager Vince Lopez heartily continues this cooperation to help local veterans. The hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food and toys collected locally helped to provide nearly 10,000 pounds of goods last year to assist needy veterans and their families through the CABA Holiday Airlift. All of the locally collected items were distributed in Delta.
The generosity of the people of the Delta community, CABA-associated businesses and the staff at Dollar Tree in Delta will again this year help local veterans and their families who need a little boost around the holiday season. The joint VFW and CABA Airlift has a goal of 18,000 pounds for the 2017 statewide effort, which will include nearly 20 aircraft and their pilots. VFW and CABA members will load the aircraft and dozens of VFW members will assist in the distribution.
A donation box will be available at Dollar Tree through Dec. 11. The CABA Airlift is scheduled to arrive in Montrose early in December, and then all donated items will be sorted, packaged and distributed by members of VFW Post # 3571 in Delta.
For further information, or if you wish to make a cash donation, call post service officer Jim Baker at 874-8172.
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
