This year nearly a hundred U.S. military veterans and their immediate family members attended the annual Welcome Home Veterans picnic hosted by Lee Marts VFW Post 3571 and its Ladies Auxiliary. The weather was so hot the picnic was relocated from outside the new post home in North Delta to the air-conditioned IOOF Delta Lodge #116 hall.
Attending were veterans who had served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. There were no Coast Guardsmen or Merchant Marines in attendance this year. A quick poll showed that the men and women present had served on six of the seven continents — no Antarctica veterans were present. Included were combat veterans who had served in Iraq, Kosovo, Panama, Granada, Vietnam and Korea, and a World War II vet who had been in France and Germany. Several unsung Cold War veterans who served in Europe were also in attendance, as well as many who honorably served their country in the U.S. or overseas in peacetime. All were welcomed home to Delta and thanked for their valuable service.
A brief presentation was made by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) representatives Carlton Mason and Stacey Ryan. CASA serves abused and neglected children who have been removed from their homes. A plea was made to the veterans present to volunteer their time to assist these children through CASA. Another brief presentation was made by Shaylyn Foley about the People to People program and her upcoming trip to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pa., and New York City. Shalyn is sponsored, in part, by VFW Post 3571 and its Ladies Auxiliary.blog comments powered by Disqus
