Full-sized resting/sleeping mats for the homeless are being crocheted from plastic grocery bags by members of Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary #3571. It takes 500 of the plastic bags to make one mat. Walmart stores in this area have donated 96,000 bags for the project, the local VFW told the DCI. Eight to 10 post and auxiliary members are working on the project. It takes eight to 10 hours of continuous work to complete one mat. They are quite thick when completed and provide a noticeable resting cushion. The cushions will be donated by the VFW to Delta’s Abraham Connection for distribution to homeless people the organization comes into contact with. Donations of clean, used bags can be made at the drop-off container located inside the back door of Delta McDonald’s, or by calling Sandy Baker with the auxiliary at 874-8172.
