The Del Rose Chorus of Sweet Adelines International in Delta attended a contest in Colorado Springs the weekend of April 4-6. The contest provides an opportunity for chorus members to sing before their peers and to be judged on two prepared songs.
The Del Rose Chorus, under the direction of Mickey Shirley and Susanna Sorenson, has been earnestly preparing for this contest for months. Guest directors were brought in to help with expression, breathing, pronunciation and attitude.
Though chorus members were well prepared, many first-year members were feeling the jitters. "I knew the songs in my sleep and was very sure of the notes but I just couldn't seem to take a deep breath," said Caryl Rowland. "It seemed to help when we went into the last practice room and warmed up. I was able to slowly calm down as we got in line. Six minutes of performing went by fast. Then we were off the stage and able to enjoy the rest of the contestants' performances."
In addition to performing, chorus members enjoyed meals together, making new friends and seeing old ones.
