Flag honoring duty

c01 vfwPhoto by Hank Lohmeyer Flag honoring duty Members of Grand Mesa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9221 performed flag-honoring duties at the beginning of the Cedaredge Town Board’s meeting on March 21. A worn U.S. flag was retired and replaced with a new one that has briefly flown over the U.S. Capitol. A new Colorado flag was also raised by post members in the community center dining hall. Post members participating in the ceremony are Deon Strain, post commander, Tom McLamb, Eldon Lyneis and Leroy Kenner.

Pea Green Community Club elects officers

The Pea Green Community Club met Thursday, March 14, for a potluck dinner and a reorganizational meeting. Forty-one members enjoyed a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings, with fellowship and visiting.

Vets’ office name honors Gordon O’Brien

a03 obrienPhoto by Hank Lohmeyer Gordon O’Brien displays the commemorative citation he received from the Delta County Commissioners on Monday for his 24 years as Delta County’s veteran service officer, and for his many other activities supporting the community and serving its people. Shown with O’Brien at the courthouse on Monday is Brian Ayers, the county’s current veteran service officer who nominated O’Brien for the honor.Gordon O'Brien of Delta was honored by the Delta County Commissioners on Monday by having the county's Veteran Service Office named in his honor.

"Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Delta Board of County Commissioners do hereby proclaim that the Delta County Veteran Service Office be named in honor of Gordon T. O'Brien, Major, USAF (retired) and that said office shall herein be referred to as the Gordon O'Brien Veteran Service Office," states the proclamation which was mounted on a plaque, read by Commission Chair Doug Atchley and presented to O'Brien.

Groups work hard providing scholarships

c02 scholarshipPhoto by Hank Lohmeyer Raising student scholarship money takes a community. The work is fun and always rewarding.It goes on year round by many groups in Surface Creek Valley. A scholarship fund raiser was held last week by members of the ESA sorority, from left, Kay Westlake, Rhonda Gold, SaraJane McCully, Mary Kinzer, Barbara Cairns, Mary Callahan, Karen Spears, Randy Palmer, Marilyn Cederberg, Shirley Clayton and Elaine Muldowney.It takes a lot of work to raise the funds for even one scholarship to help a graduating Cedaredge High School senior, and many local clubs and organizations work year round helping in the effort.

For example, last Friday eleven members of the local Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) sorority concluded a lot of planning, cooking, decorating, and other hard work by staging a successful fund-raising event on St. Patrick's Day.
