Longtime Hotchkiss resident Erma Meier Sheldon died Dec. 4, 2012. She was 93.
Erma Jessie Meier was born Feb. 23, 1919, in DuBois, Neb., to William and Ida (Parli) Meier. She spent her childhood and attended school in DuBois, graduating from DuBois High School in 1937. She graduated from Peru State Teachers College with a teaching degree in 1941.
She married Ben Sheldon Aug. 27, 1941. They lived in Rock Springs, Wyo., Greenbelt, Md., Lincoln, Neb., and Gunnison before moving to Barrow Mesa near Hotchkiss in 1950.
Mrs. Sheldon raised her four children while helping Ben with the orchards, hay fields and dairy. She enjoyed cooking, canning, baking and playing pinochle with friends.
For many years she was a leader of the Barrow Mesa 4-H Club. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Margie Hollembeak and husband Jere, Cindy DeMore and husband Dick, Ralph Sheldon and wife Wendy; a brother, Verne Meier; a sister-in-law, Miriam Ryan; 13 grandchildren, Bryan, Eric, Lisa, Jered, Dillon, Geoff, Natalie, Austin, Allison, Benjamin, Leah, Jeremy and Adam; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ben Sheldon; a son, Benjamin Sheldon; a granddaughter, Hannah; a great-granddaughter, Maggie; her siblings, William, Alma, Margaret, Helen, Lois, Loise, Howard, Clyde, Doreen and Lyle.
Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss on Dec. 8.
Arrangements were handled by Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
