Longtime Delta resident Russell R. Fender passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Veterans Administration Community Living Center in Grand Junction. He was 96.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction. A celebration of Russell's life will take place in the summer.
Russell R. Fender was born to Stanley and Mary (Sipes) Fender on Nov. 20, 1916, in Judah, Ind., and he grew up and attended school in Bedford, Ind.
During World War II, Russ honorably served his country for nearly five years in the U.S. Army, with additional training in the Army Air Corps. It was during the war that Russ met Mollie Wandelle "Penny" Pentecost. This "gentleman from Indiana" married Penny on May 6, 1945, in Austin, Texas. Russ and Penny would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this week.
The Fenders reared two daughters and a son in Lafayette before choosing to live at their Tranquil Spot in Delta over 40 years ago.
A master carpenter, Russ loved the outdoors. He fished Colorado. The mountains were his solace, but people were his passion. Throughout his entire life Russ cared for others. And he would have told you that the secret to his long and satisfying life was regular coffee shop camaraderie, extensive traveling and avid sports watching.
Russ is survived by his wife of 68 years, Penny Fender of Delta; his remaining brother and best friend, Harold F. "Bent" Fender of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Jill Walton (Winston) of Hamilton, Texas, and Bette Ammon (Randy) of Hayden, Idaho; and his son, Stanley Harold "Rusty" Fender (Lori) of Springfield, Va. Russ is further survived by six grandchildren, Clay Walton, Mollie Walton, Cal DeBruyne, Memory Fender, Katie Palmer (Randy), and Levi Fender (Alison); and three great-grandchildren, Jessica E. Sipos, Evelyn C. Walton and Max J. Palmer.
Russ was preceded in death by two brothers, Ermal Fender and Hansel Lynn Fender; and his parents.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Russell's memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416; or to Veterans Administration Hospice Care, 2121 North Avenue, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
Arrangements are being handled by Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
