Former Delta residident Mildred Thomas died May 20, 2013, at the age of 101.
Mildred Ellen Goswick was born in Hartville, Mo., May 14, 1912, to Ralph and Sabra Goswick.
When she was 5, she and her parents moved by train to Redlands Mesa near Hotchkiss. She attended Delta High School, graduating in 1931.
She married Harry Pangborn May 1, 1933. He died Oct. 15, 1978.
She married her brother-in-law, Verne Thomas on Aug. 25, 1982. He died June 20, 1987.
She worked at Hollands store before moving to Grand Junction in 1956 where she worked at Manuel's and J.C. Penney. She transferred to the Delta J.C. Penney store and moved back to Delta in 1963. She then took a position at Hollands, remaining there when it became Mr. Roberts.
Mrs. Thomas enjoyed sewing, cake decorating, home decorating, drawing, crafts, poetry, reading and entertaining in her home.
In her earlier years she was a member of the Grand Junction Home Extension Club, was active in the PTA at Lincoln OM Grade School, and assisted with Girls Scouts. She belonged to the Delta County Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies volunteers for over 20 years, was a member of Royal Neighbors of America for over 50 years and was a member of the T & R Club (Tired & Retired). She was a member of the Grand Mesa Bible Church for several years. She served on the Baptist Church flower committee and kitchen committee and was a deaconess for many years.
After her second husband, Verne, died she moved into a duplex at Thompson Manor. She moved to The Retreat at Palisade Assisted Living in Palisade and, in 2010, to Mesa Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Iris Moore and husband Sherman of Grand Junction; two grandsons, Steven and Robert Moore, both of Grand Junction; nephews, Byron Goswick and wife Shaaron of Erie, Dick Pangborn and wife Gaye of El Cajon, Calif., a nephew-in-law, Steve Elsmore and wife Peggy of Grand Junction; nieces Jean Dapper and husband John of Grants Pass, Ore., and Betty Linker of Denver; three stepdaughters, Hazel Storm of Stuart, Iowa, Janet Aldrich and husband Larry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Judy Bunney and husband Don of Marion, Iowa; a stepdaughter-in-law, Rosalee Wilson and husband Jim of Raleigh, N.C.; 23 stepgrandchildren; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Harry Pangborn and Verne Thomas; her son, Donald Pangborn; a sister, Iris Pugh and husband Truman; a brother, Wayne Goswick and wife Fern; a niece, Lois Elsmore; a nephew, Kenneth Pugh; two stepsons, Lyle and Glenn Thomas; and a stepdaughter, Verna Baird and husband Malcom.
There will be a viewing at Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction Friday, May 24, from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 25, at Delta City Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Martin Mortuary with Merle Miller officiating.
