Steven Lacoff Plavnick died July 19, 2013, at his home in Paonia. He was 67.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 27, in the community room at Paonia Public Library.
Mr. Plavnick was born in Detroit, Mich., Nov. 15, 1945, to Bernard Plavnick and Betty Lacoff. He grew up in Oak Park, Mich.
He graduated from high school in 1963. He received bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate in criminal justice from Michigan State University. He specialized in non-traditional causes of deviance. He worked with schools to help them adopt behavior change procedures to help children.
Mr. Plavnick enjoyed running, biking, trail hiking, fishing, playing chess and harmonica and listening to music.
He is survived by his partner, Jacqueline Jeffreys of Paonia; his former partner and mother of his children, Sharon Plavnick of Holt, Mich.; two sons, Matthew Plavnick and wife Jenna of Denver and Joshua Plavnick and wife Amy of Ann Arbor, Mich.; one daughter, Rebecca Plavnick of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sisters, Nadine Bell and husband Seymour of Dallas, Texas, and Cheryl Plavnick and partner Rae Siporin of Corrales, N.M.; and five grandchildren.
