Longtime Cedaredge resident James A. Willis Sr. died Aug. 6, 2013. He was 85.
Jim and his wife of 18 years, Lila Willis, spent their winters in Casa Grande, Arizona.
He was born in Elbridge, Obion County, Tenn., Dec. 12, 1927, to Reece and Mola (Wolfe) Willis.
Mr. Willis served a short time in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II.
He married Margery Trewet. They were married 46 years before she died in 1993. He worked on her family's farm in Fort Morgan for a number of years.
He worked at Hill Oil Company in Fort Morgan then ran Boulware Oil Company in Sheridan Lake. In 1964 he moved to Alamosa and opened Willis Oil Company. In his later years he owned additional businesses, including the auto parts store in Cedaredge, and sold real estate.
Mr. Willis was active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and Shriners International. He enjoyed riding three-wheelers with his Shriner brothers to raise money for the Shriners' Children's Hospitals and was instrumental in raising funds to build the DeerCreek Village Golf Course in Cedaredge. He enjoyed riding snowmobiles with his four sons, playing golf and cards, hunting golf balls, biking and running.
He is survived by his wife, Lila; his five children, Kathryn Wohnoutka and husband George of Katy, Texas, James Willis Jr. of Alamosa, Robert Willis and wife Karen of Del Norte, John Willis and wife Lora of Grass Valley, Calif., and Steve Willis and wife Kimberly of Friends-wood, Texas; three stepsons, Dean Peters and wife Sandy of Minneapolis, Minn., Jeffrey Peters and Richard Peters, both of Mankato, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church with Vicki Street officiating. Interment will be at Cedaredge Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge.
