Phillip Roy Shelton died Aug. 16, 2013, at his residence in Somerset. He was 77.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, at North Fork Baptist Church, Highway 133 and Samuel Wade Road in Paonia, with Pastor Tobey Williams presiding. A potluck will follow.
Mr. Shelton was born in Harlingen, Texas, April 6, 1936, to Phillip and Maye (Johnson) Shelton. He spent his childhood and attended schools in San Antonio, Texas, graduating from Luther Burbank High School in 1955. He attended Sportan School of Aeronautics and Naguib School of Sculpture.
He served with the U.S. Army in Nuremburg, Germany, from 1957-1959.
On June 26, 1976, he married Adrien Witowski, who was also an artist. They lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, and together operated Shelton Studio. She died May 1, 2007. He later married Judy Richard in Paonia.
Mr. Shelton was a member of North Fork Baptist Church, Friends of Somerset and Southwest Sculpture Society. He helped create the Zora Zackley Park in Somerset.
He became a pilot at the age of 16. He received five awards for his sculptures.
Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife, Judy Shelton of Somerset; a sister, Sherry Hockenberry of Livingston, Texas; and two nephews, Thad and Theo Hasse.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
