Geraldine "Geri" Carey died Oct. 19, 2013, at Colorow Care Center following a lengthy illness. She was 90.
She was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Coffeyville, Kan., to Pauline (Miller) and Madison Hoover Jr. She attended school in Coffeyville and graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1941. She studied business at Coffeyville Junior College for two years.
She married Harry William Carey in Coffeyville, Kan., on Jan. 17, 1943. They lived in Big Springs, Texas, during the war. Mrs. Carey was employed as a civil service stenographer and Harry served in the U.S. Army. They moved to Paonia in 1946. She and Harry were divorced in 1979.
Mrs. Carey was employed by the DC Hawkins Agency from 1953 to 1980. She later served as town clerk of Paonia, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Eastern Star and the First Christian Church. She served as treasurer for the senior citizens for 10 years.
She is survived by a son, Michael (Thiry) Carey of West Jordan, Utah; a daughter, Barbara (Len) Axelson of Paonia; and 12 grandchildren, Gena Harris of Singapore, Mike Carey Jr. of Washington, D.C., Pauline Warner of Nevada, Jeffrey Carey and Randall Carey of Utah, Audrey Sandvik and Keith Carey of Oklahoma, Holly Carey, Susan Carey and Amy Owens of Colorado Springs, Matthew Green of Grand Junction and Elizabeth Martin of Loganville, Ga.; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her former spouse of 36 years, Harry Carey; a son, Richard Carey; a granddaughter, Hope Carey; a sister, Gloria Chrisope; and her companion of 14 years, Howard King.
Cremation was performed by Taylor Funeral Home with interment to occur in Coffeyville, Kan., at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to HopeWest Hospice, P.O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.
