Lifetime Paonia resident Pete A. Poulos died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at his home in Paonia. He was 81.
A graveside memorial service honoring Pete's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia, with a reception to follow at the American Legion Wilson Head Post #97.
Born April, 23, 1932, to John Poulos (Spiro Tyrphonopoulos) and Fronia E. (Tucker) Poulos. He was born at home and delivered by his father as the roads (unpaved streets) were so muddy that the doctor was unable to come to the house. Pete graduated from Paonia High School in 1950. He attended the Emily Griffith Opportunity School in Denver and graduated in 1951 with a Master Barber License.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years aboard the USS Valley Forge from 1952 to 1955 during the Korean War. He returned to Paonia and opened Pete's Barber Shop in 1956. It remained open until his death Nov. 8, 2013.
On Aug. 10, 1957, Pete married Evelyn Maddox. The newlyweds remained in Paonia, raising four children. The couple celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this year.
Pete was a member of the Paonia Masonic Lodge No. 121 A.F. & A.M. for 56 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Hotchkiss Elks Lodge, American Legion Wilson Head Post #97 for 61 years, United Methodist Church of Paonia and St. John's Greek Orthodox Church of Pueblo.
Pete's barbering career covered six generations. He cut his grandfather's hair when he returned from the Navy and continued on through the years, eventually cutting his great-grandson's hair along with numerous generations of North Fork Valley families.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Maddox) Poulos of Paonia; children, Martha (Mark Shuss) of Hotchkiss, John C. (Sue Wahl) Poulos of Paonia, Athena (James Storebo) of Fort Collins and Frona (James Wilson) of Longmont; two nieces, Susan Poulos (Rick Smith) of Delta and Mary Jane Poulos of Paonia; two nephews, John J. Poulos of Grand Junction and Joseph G. Poulos of Golden; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, Evelyn Palese and Georgia (Dutch) Cheves; and two brothers, John (Dick) Poulos and James "Jim" Poulos.
