Lifetime Delta resident Robert John Valdez died Jan. 6, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, from complications of a heart attack. He was 61.
He was born in Delta June 20, 1952, to Beatrice and Juan Laboto.
Mr. Valdez served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1972 to 1978 as an executive chef.
He married Hattie West on Sept. 11, 1976.
He worked as a meat cutter, horse trainer, farmhand, and a jewelry and wood craftsman.
He enjoyed all animals, especially his horses, spending time with his family, making the most of each day, caring for his farm animals, spending time outdoors, working with his hands repairing fence or "hitching posts," going to Delta Sales Yard on Thursdays, and collecting cowboy memorabilia.
At his request, no services will be held.
Mr. Valdez is survived by his wife, Hattie Valdez; a son, RJ Valdez; a brother, Joe Archuleta; a daughter-in-law, Dana Valdez; a granddaughter, Justine Valdez; a niece, Sheila (Harp) Suckow; a nephew, Cory (Melinda) Mason; and several grandnephews and grandnieces.
He was preceded in death by a son, Justin Valdez; his mother, Beatrice Archuleta; and a sister, Alice Rule.
