Conservation Center annual meeting is Feb. 10
The Conservation Center is celebrating 35 years of working to protect the lands and waters of the North Fork Valley and Delta County. All community members are welcome to the Conservation Center's annual meeting from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at Memorial Hall in Hotchkiss.
One of the meeting's highlights will be a presentation by Randy Udall, who will speak about energy challenges related to coal and natural gas production and their impacts on water resources. Udall is the former director of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency in Aspen and is one of the nation's leading activists in promoting energy sustainability.
The Conservation Center will also present a Conservation Achievement Award in recognition of the nation's first large-scale on-site coal mine methane capture facility at Oxbow's Elk Creek Mine in Somerset. The facility will capture enough methane to heat all the homes in Grand Junction. The 3Mw of electricity generated will be purchased by the Aspen Skiing Company. Tom Vessels of North Fork Energy LLC and a representative of Aspen Skiing Company will be in attendance to accept the award.
State Senator Gail Schwartz, who has championed in the Colorado legislature the capture and conversion of coal mine methane, will also speak at the meeting.
Other highlights include a review of last year's challenges and successes, as well as updates on current conservation efforts.
