Mayor Susie Steckel told the Crawford trustees on March 20 that she had spoken with Mark Roeber, county commissioner, about the town's displeasure over the new policies concerning the Crawford Library. Roeber then brought their issues up with fellow commissioner Doug Atchley.
Atchley then contacted the mayor about their concerns.
"We raised nearly a million dollars for this library, and they are not going to close it down three days a week. We're just not going to allow that," Mayor Steckel said. "We are going to keep it open at least until 8 o'clock so that people who come home from work can go there."
Atchley told Steckel he would be in touch with her.
Since Jan. 1, the Crawford Library has been open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.
There was a public meeting on Feb. 28 at the Crawford Library that was well attended. A number from the Crawford board were present and spoke.
"They don't need to cut the hours. I know they are short of money, but they have ... 14 employees and 11 of them are managers," Steckel said.
"They should have left the managers here, because they know what is going on," trustee Hetty Todd said.
When contacted the following day by the Delta County Independent, Annette Choszczyk, Delta County Public Library District director, stated there are only five managers. Kit Stephenson is now the manager for the North Fork libraries which include Crawford, Paonia and Hotchkiss. There is one manager, Lea Hart, for the west end, Delta and Cedaredge. There is a technology IT manager, John Gavin. Gavin works at all the libraries. There is a literacy and outreach programming manager, Christel Pretorius, and she works in all the libraries and in a couple of other facilities where the district offers classes and programs. The communications and development manager position is currently open. LaDonna Gunn, who previously held that position, has moved from the district.
The district has also changed hours at the Hotchkiss and Paonia libraries, but not in Delta and Cedaredge. Hotchkiss Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Paonia is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Choszczyk said the hours are based on the attendance of the public. She also stated there is no danger the Crawford Library will be closed.blog comments powered by Disqus
