Each year the Wyoming and Colorado Meat Processors Associations gather in either Fort Collins or Laramie for their annual convention. Hotchkiss Meats has been winning awards at the convention ever since they started submitting entries in 2002.
On March 16 they brought home three more awards.
Hotchkiss Meats, owned by Terry Neville, won first place in the Taste of the Rockies Meat or Main Dish for its German Jalapeno Swiss Sausage, first place in Desserts or Salads for its Mississippi Mud Pie and was the grand reserve champion for its Smoked Polish Sausage.
"Quite awhile ago we didn't have that many products to enter in the contest. Since I've had some things to do with the plant, I went to sausage school in Kansas City and we went from six to 30 different varieties of sausage. We won overall grand champion for our hams," Neville said. "We have won overall grand champion twice between the Wyoming and Colorado Meat Processors Associations."
Neville worked for his father-in-law Orville DeMoulin before becoming the owner of Hotchkiss Meats in 2007.
Neville convinced DeMoulin to begin entering some of their sausages and other products at the convention in 2002. Neville said DeMoulin "was pretty surprised" when he won an award. "From there we did a lot more."
Hotchkiss Meats has an impressive number of products for sale — bacon, smoked brisket, smoked sausage from 21mm meat sticks to summer sausage which is 65 millimeters, and then its regular hot dog-style sausages.
For its own recipes for sausages Hotchkiss Meats doesn't put in MSG or other chemicals. "We try to keep it all natural," Neville said.
They also have jerky, ground beef in patties or in bulk and Philly cheese patties. They smoke turkeys, bacon and whole hams in their computerized smoke house.
Hotchkiss Meats does custom processing for customers in Delta, Mesa, Montrose and Garfield counties.
Hotchkiss Meats is in the process of adding federal inspection several days a week. Federal inspection will allow ranchers to sell meat products processed at Hotchkiss Meats to restaurants.
"I would like to see that implemented by this summer," Neville said.
Hotchkiss Meats is known for supporting the local community. It helps kids by supporting softball teams and Partners. It gives gift certificates for local fundraisers.
