Jeff Schwartz of Big B's has requested a variance for his business on High Street in Hotchkiss. Schwartz wants to expand the current facility to accommodate a bigger cooler.
He asked the Hotchkiss Town Council on April 11 what he would have to do in order to have a variance approved.
The property on which Big B's is situated is an odd shape. "Some of our property is in the middle of the street. Some of our property is in the middle of the railroad tracks, and so we are asking for a set back variance on the southeast corner," Schwartz said. He wants to build a 50'x70' building.
Schwartz purchased the business in 2003 and had an option to purchase the property. "We have invested a lot of money in the cider mill," Schwartz said. "These investments were made prior to the building code." He said town code allows for variances for odd-shaped properties.
Mayor Wendell Koontz told Schwartz he would first have to take his proposal to the Hotchkiss Planning Commission. He would need to present a sketch and a plat. There would have to be a public hearing on May 22. The planning commission's decision would then be presented at the June 13 town council meeting. The trustees could then vote on the variance request.
Schwartz was concerned with the dates given because it would be close to the time Big B's would be pressing apples.blog comments powered by Disqus
