A 65-year-old Buena Vista woman died after an accident on Highway 133 at mile marker 19 near Somerset.
According to Sgt. Mike Baker, Colorado State Patrol information officer, Sharon Kay Hamilton was traveling southbound on the shoulder of Highway 133 on Tuesday, June 25. At 11:25 a.m., Hamilton abruptly cut across the roadway and was struck and run over by a box truck which was traveling behind her.
The truck driver, Eliasu Bali, 36, of Denver, swerved left to avoid Hamilton but hit her bicycle, knocking her off the bike. The truck then ran over her. The Colorado State Patrol did not issue any citations in the accident.
The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office reports that Hamilton was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, where she died on Wednesday, June 26.
Her obituary states Hamilton was an organ donor and her death saved three lives.
An avid cyclist and a member of the Colorado Bicycle Club, Hamilton was headed to Paonia for an overnight stay as a participant in the Bike Tour of Colorado when the tragedy occurred.blog comments powered by Disqus
