For Anna Raith, coming back to Colorado meant leaving the corporate world behind.
"Why not be our own bosses and come to Colorado where it is a better lifestyle," she said the day of the grand opening for her and her husband's business, Snow Dogs.
Snow Dogs is a new restaurant in the Redwood Arms Plaza at 81 Highway 133 in Paonia.
They had a soft opening a week before their grand opening on July 3 to coincide with the start of Cherry Days.
Both Anna and Kurt Raith are from Chicago. Anna did come to live in Paonia for several years when her parents moved here 17 years ago. She graduated from Paonia High School. Then she returned to Chicago to get her college degree. When her dad passed away in 2006, Anna quit her job and moved back to help her mother for a year and a half. Returning to Chicago, she went to work for Wintrust in the banking industry. While she thought it was one of the greatest organizations to work for, the lifestyle of Colorado was a lure for both her and Kurt.
Why open a Chicago-style hot dog restaurant in Paonia?
"We like our comfort food. It was something we were brought up on and we just wanted to bring that taste of Chicago and other foods to the State of Colorado. We love being here," Anna said.
Snow Dogs is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from 1-8 p.m. on Sunday.
They and their menu have already developed a following, judging by the crowd that came to their grand opening.
All their hot dogs are made with 100% Vienna beef and are in natural casings. They also serve Italian beef sandwiches, fries, bratwurst, Italian sausage, Polish sausage, gyros, fried mushrooms, french fries, a chili bowl and fried dill pickle slices. For beverages they have Coke and Dr. Pepper products on tap.
Stop by for lunch or dinner. Enjoy take out or there's room to dine in.
