From sea to shining sea comes true when 4k for Cancer sponsored by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults dip their bike wheels in the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. Paonia will be on the route for two groups in July. A group of 29 is pedaling from Baltimore to San Francisco with an overnight stay in Paonia July 16-17, while a group of 27 will bike from Baltimore to San Diego with an overnight stay in Paonia July 20-21.
The ride is a way of remembering cancer victims, raising money for research and increasing awareness about identifying and treating cancer. Riders dedicate this trip in memory of someone they know who lost the battle to cancer or someone who is a cancer survivor. They will share their stories at a 6 p.m. supper at the Methodist Fellowship Hall, Third and Onarga, on Saturday, July 20. The public is invited for supper and the program.
This 4k event was first conceived in 2001. In 2013, 884 riders will participate in the summer program. Paonia United Methodist Church has hosted a group annually; however, this time two groups have requested to come.
The second group heard such glowing reports about Paonia that they, too, wanted to experience first hand small-town hospitality. Perhaps they were also influenced by the promise of ice cream at Ollie's on Paonia's Grand Avenue.
According to Jan Probert, 4k riders stay at the Methodist Church annex and shower at the Ellen Hansen-Smith Teen Center. United Methodist Women provide supper, while Methodist men cook breakfast to fortify the riders for their journey from sea to shining sea.blog comments powered by Disqus
