In February 2011, the North Fork Pool, Park and Recreation District completed a master plan for the district. The purpose was to develop a plan that will guide the future direction of the District over the next 10 years.
While the district has historically been recognized as the managing entity for Crossroads Park, adjacent to the Hotchkiss High School and including the North Fork Pool and the soccer fields, it also works with the Montessori Community School to maintain the children's playground. In addition, it is tasked with maintaining the Paonia Skate Park at the town park and the Apple Valley tennis courts in Paonia.
Many ideas and issues came out of the public comments and stakeholder meetings held during the master planning process and the district is taking steps to prioritize some of those needs.
At its July 15 board meeting, the board voted to begin creating a database that will enable it to act as a clearinghouse for recreational programs, opportunities and facilities in the North Fork Valley. Over the next few months it will be compiling information and contacts for providers of existing classes, activities, team sports, workshops and sports camps as well as facilities that can be used for recreational activities. This information will include both publicly funded and privately operated programs and facilities.
Once this database is completed it will be published on the district's website, promoted via social media and shared with the towns and chambers of commerce in the district. The goal is to promote existing recreational opportunities in the valley and encourage greater utilization of existing facilities. Once that goal is achieved, the need for new facilities and/or expanded programs can be addressed, either by the district or through private businesses or contractors.
The public is being asked to help in the data collection process. If you have an activity or facility that you would like listed, contact the district, either by phone at 872-6122 or via email at northforkrecreation@
