A grant of close to $85,000 will support the hiring of two additional kindergarten teachers to keep class sizes smaller at Lincoln and Garnet Mesa elementary schools.
"This is a true gift to our district," superintendent Caryn Gibson said.
"Our classrooms will be more comfortable."
Instead of 25 students each, the kindergarten classes will drop to about 20.
Gibson made the announcement at the July 18 meeting of the school board, where she recognized Angela Fedler, director of early childhood programs, for her efforts in securing the grant.
Gibson also announced a Colorado Early Literacy Grant which will fund a pilot program at Lincoln Elementary School. Funds will be available for a half-time interventionist, as well as training for teachers.
The 2013-2014 school year is the first year of the grant program, which is being implemented in 30 schools in 15 school districts. The focus is reading competency for grades K-3.blog comments powered by Disqus
