Nomination petitions are available for candidates interested in one of the three seats which will be filled in the Nov. 5 election.
Positions are open in:
Director District I — Precincts 1, 2, 3 and 4 and that part of the district in Mesa County. This is generally the City of Delta and west. This seat is currently held by Cheryl Hines, who is term-limited.
Director District IV — Precincts 13, 14, 15 and 16. This is generally the Hotchkiss area and north and east of Cedaredge. This seat is currently held by Tammy Smith, who is completing her first term on the school board. She plans to seek re-election.
Director District V — Precincts 7, 18, 19 and 20. This is generally the Paonia-Crawford area. This seat is currently held by Jan Tuin, who was appointed to the school board in 2012 to fill a vacancy. Tuin said he is leaning toward running for the seat, but is balancing the time commitment against other obligations.
School board member Kathy Svenson provides this job description: "Must be able to read (much reading), attend meetings and have an active interest in the welfare of our students and our republic. All elected public officials including school board members swear an oath to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. A school board member has the unique position and responsibility of truly protecting our freedoms as much as the soldiers who fight."
To be qualified, a candidate must be a registered elector and a resident of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election. Anyone who has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child is ineligible.
Candidates for office must present a petition signed by 50 eligible electors from anywhere in the district. Nomination petitions may be obtained from the Delta County clerk and recorder's office in the county courthouse. Completed petitions must be filed no later than Aug. 26.
If there's any question about whether your address falls within District I, IV or V, the county clerk's office will also be able to verify residency. A map of director districts is also available at the school district office.blog comments powered by Disqus
