Fifth graders plant a tree for Arbor Day

c01 arbordayPhoto by Hank Lohmeyer Jim Leser, chair of the Cedaredge Tree Board, led fifth graders in an Arbor Day Celebration at Cedaredge Elementary School. An Autumn Purple Ash tree, named Steve Ash by the students, was planted in the playground area at the school. Boys and girls from all three fifth grade classes at Cedaredge Elementary School took part in a program and tree planting to celebrate Arbor Day. Even though the local event was scheduled for the first day of May, rather than in April hoping for better weather, the morning was a bit chilly on the field and playground.

Jan Rogers is teacher of the year

Pictured with Rogers are (l-r): foundation board members Kathryn McCarthy, Pam Bliss, Dr. John Willet, Ted Hoff, and Pam Cocker. Rogers was selected from more than 60 nominees to receive the award. The award came with a check for $10,000.Crawford Elementary School first-grade teacher Jan Rogers has a framed drawing hanging in her classroom of her first-grade teacher. Rogers said she absolutely loved her, and held onto the picture long after first grade ended.

Prom wonderland 2013

Paonia High School prom royalty (from left) included prince Jason Sturgis and princess Taylor Polson from the class of 2014; prom queen Chelsy Reed and prom king Garrett Park; and honorary prom king, Dave Burns. The theme of this year’s prom was “Alice in Wonderland.” Chelsy made her dress from duct tape, and won a blue ribbon for it at the Delta County Fair.

Smith, Vernon, Bowling awarded FFA scholarships

Smith is a 2012 graduate of Hotchkiss High School and is studying agricultural engineering at Iowa State University.
