Our country’s future is not as gloomy as portrayed

Dear Editor:

After reading Delta County Republican Party Chairman Don Suppes's letter in the Nov. 14 issue of the DCI, we feel compelled to respond, although in a somewhat different vein than Mr. Suppes' gloomy vision of our country's future.

First, we are heartened that so many Delta County citizens voted in the election.

This is something we can all be proud of, and it is a great credit to people's understanding of their civic responsibility.

Second, we are very grateful for the good work done by our county clerk, Ann Eddins, and her election staff. They are committed to serving the county, and they are doing a great job of it! When we saw reports of the long lines that some voters in other states suffered through, we were more convinced than ever that we have a good election process in place here in Colorado.

Third, we want to thank all the candidates, winners and losers alike, for giving people clear choices in this election. Anyone who has run for public office knows that it takes an incredible amount of time and commitment, in return for which one takes an incredible amount of abuse and name-calling.

Finally, we want to thank the many Democratic volunteers who worked so hard in such a difficult county for Democrats, where we are outnumbered more than two-to-one. In particular, we are pleased to have many younger voters willing to do the door-knocking and phone-calling that are so important during election campaigns.

As for Mr. Suppes' contention that only misery awaits us following President Obama's re-election, we feel compelled to point out that Governor Romney, in his concession speech, said that he and his wife would be praying for the president every day. Perhaps that is a practice that would be beneficial for everyone to follow.
