At the Paonia Town Council meeting on Sept. 10, a moratorium was adopted against allowing retail sales of marijuana in Paonia, along with setting an election question for the November 2014 general election. Along with this will be several associated questions pertaining to marijuana.
The main issue for a majority of us is not to allow retail sales of marijuana in Paonia. I, as many, would have preferred to see the board of trustees simply opt out of this issue by Oct. 1 of this year. Sadly, this did not happen.
There are many different quirks and opinions that you will hear over the next 14 months. I see it as quite simple. At issue are our community values and the futures of our children and grandchildren. Our younger people look to us to act in their benefit. In the future, we should be able to look at our kids and grandkids and say we acted in their best interest. Most of us agree open store fronts selling marijuana in Paonia would hardly serve their best interests. Just imagine the type of clientele coming to our town for their marijuana desires.
I want to reassure all residents that this issue will not be taken lightly. With citizen involvement, we will deny retail sales of marijuana in our small community. The key is that we must work together and all do our part. Even though many of us have been on different sides of issues, it appears we can cross those gaps and come together. We will do it for community values and for our future.
