This week's headlines

On Sunday, Jan. 27, the Grand Mesa Classic 10K was held at the Skyway Nordic ski area.

Colorado Mesa University ski racers Mira Hopkins and Kacie McCleary placed second and third for females in the Grand Mesa Classic collegiate 10K race.

CMU skier Tre Anastasia was third in the male division.

The top citizen skier and first female overall was Christie Aschwanden of Cedaredge. Matt Deeths of Grand Junction was the first citizen male. Teams from Wyoming, Western State and the Air Force Academy competed with CMU in this race.

Snow conditions on the Grand Mesa improved over the weekend with a winter storm system which left eight inches at the Skyway trail area. The Grand Mesa Nordic Council continues to groom the nordic trails at Skyway, County Line and Ward Lake.

For those looking for a fun winter competition, the Black Canyon Winter Rim Romp is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 on the south rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The San Juan Mountain Runners are hosting a day of snowshoe, ski and family events which include a five-mile snowshoe race, a 10-mile classic ski race, a non-competitive five-mile ski event and National Park Service-led family adventure hikes. Pick up race packets at the visitor center between 8:30 and 9:45 a.m.; racing begins at 10 a.m.
