An estimated 20 kids and their parents participated in the Cedaredge Public Library's Bike Day event on May 18.
It was held in concert with a state-wide early literacy program and all of the youth participating were given their own copies of the children's book "Duck on a Bike."
The library staff was assisted in staging the free event by the Cedaredge Volunteer Fire Department and the Cedaredge Police Department.
The Cedaredge Women's Literary Society, a 103-year-old organization which established the town's first library, the Delta County Independent was told, also participated providing food, refreshments and service. The Surface Creek Valley Lions Club provided a cookout hot dog lunch for the young readers, their parents and other participants.
There was a bike parade for the kids and safety tips. There was a bike riding course set up by the police department that gave youngsters a chance to practice maneuvering in a safe environment, and also to familiarize the kids with common traffic control signage.
The police department also had gifts for the kids including coloring books, sidewalk chalk and bike locks.blog comments powered by Disqus
