Police Chief Robert Yant has submitted a letter of resignation to the Town of Cedaredge.
According to Town Administrator Katie Sickles, Yant requested his resignation take effect next March 28.
He has been placed on "administrative leave" Sickles said and the department is now under the supervision of Sergeant Dan Sangers.
Sickles said the town received Yant's resignation letter on Oct. 3.
The town trustees are having a scheduled work session on Thursday, Oct. 10. Now there will be a special meeting scheduled also to discuss the chief situation.
In an interview on Wednesday, Oct. 2, Chief Yant said that both he and his wife have been happy in Cedaredge, and that he was hoping to serve the town for at least two more years. But now, after nearly four years on the job, Yant said he "feels it is time to move on."
In his letter, Yant wrote, "I am proud of the accomplishments I have made while administrating the affairs of the Cedaredge Police Department. A few examples include:receiving Professional Standards Accreditation, the American Spirit Award, increasing the professional image of the police department and reducing crime, eliminating the frequent turnover of officers, negotiating and writing the MOU [Memo of Understanding] with FCAC [Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control] that kept the animal shelter open, updating the police cars and other equipment and working for and receiving a substantial increase in pay for officers."
In his letter of resignation Yant writes, "This decision has not been an easy one, but I feel that it is in my best interest to seek employment elsewhere. Over the next five months I will be searching for my next position; this will also give Sgt. [Dan] Sanders time to get acquainted with and start training the new K-9. It will also provide time [for the Town] to search for my replacement which I would be happy to help with, if you wish."
In response to a request for comment, Sickles said in an email, "The Cedaredge Police Department will be under the leadership of Sergeant [Dan] Sanders temporarily until the position of Police Chief resumes under Chief Yant's supervision or the Board of Trustees reappoint. Public police protection has been managed with great attention and remains in competent management under Sergeant Sanders."blog comments powered by Disqus
