The Lady Bruins were 6-10-1 in 2012. There's no guarantee the end results for 2013 will be better, worse or the same, but head coach Matt Hall is thinking big when he says, "We are looking at taking the top spot in the league and advancing both to regional play and on to the state playoffs."
There are 23 players greeting Hall and assistant coaches Ray Smith, Angie Morgan and Jack Stieber each day for practice.
Hall, and the Lady Bruins, will have five seniors on this year's roster. Four of those athletes (Jazmine Gomez —catcher/outfield, Marissa Cantrell — pitcher, Kristen Alward — shortstop, and Kaitlyn Kissner — outfield) will carry impact-player implications with them when Cedaredge plays each week. The fifth senior, Katie O'Hern, will see playing time as well.
There are six juniors listed on this year's Cedaredge roster. Those juniors include Heather Wilczek, Shelby Rogers, Tijay Lehman, Mackenzie Katzdorn, Mycala Read and Raylee VanderLinde.
Team contributors from the sophomore ranks include Halley Lofley and Sam Galley.
Shayna Dale and Lacey Rodriguez are listed as freshmen.
Hall believes Basalt is the team to beat this year as they are returning league champions and most of its players return again for 2013.
Diamond Crew Begins With 6-1 Win
The Lady Bruins began their 2013 softball season on a successful note as they earned a 6-1 decision over Grand Junction's junior varsity last week.
Sophomore Samantha Galley had a two-for-three day at the plate with three RBIs and two stolen bases. Junior Raylee VanderLindee was one-for-two with a home run, and Melissa Cantrell picked up the win after allowing just one run on four hits and collecting 11 strike outs.
Cedaredge scored two runs in the first inning and added three more in the third. A single run in the fourth accounted for the Lady Bruins' sixth and final run of the game. Grand Junction scored its lone run in the third.
The Lady Bruins were in Fruita for a contest against the Wildcat's junior varsity on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Results from that game will appear in next week's paper.
Cedaredge finishes the week with a game in Cortez on Friday (4 p.m.) and a twin bill against Eagle Valley on Saturday. Those games begin at 12 noon and 2 p.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
