You don't count the 2012 1A state football champions out of a shot at another title even if they don't have the best record in the state. Cedaredge's 38-30 victory in Meeker tightened the race in 1A WSL play.
The Cowboys fell to 1-2 in league play and have a 5-2 overall record. Cedaredge is 2-1 in league and 5-2 overall. The top two spots belong to Paonia and Hotchkiss who have identical records at 3-0 and 6-1.
Roaring Fork and Lake County are out of this year's race with 0-3 league marks.
The Bruins started Friday's game with 17 straight points for a seemingly comfortable lead heading into the second quarter.
A 36-yard field goal by Bryce Klassen got the Bruins rolling in the first quarter. Xander Camp scored two touchdowns in the quarter, with Klassen kicking the extra points, to give Cedaredge its 17-0 lead after one period of play.
Tylor Beach caught a 3-yard pass from quarterback Trent Walker in the second quarter that pushed the Bruins' lead to 24-0 after the Klassen kick.
Meeker scored eight points in the second stanza when Jacob Phelan scored Meeker's first touchdown and then ran for the two-point conversion to account for the Cowboy's eight points at halftime.
Meeker began the second half scoring on a Raul Lopez 80-yard pass completion from Phelan. T.J. Shelton scooted into the end zone for the two-point conversion, cutting Cedaredge's lead to 24-16.
Cedaredge managed to put more points on the board with the third touchdown by Camp from 36 yards out in the third quarter. Klassen's kick upped the Bruins' lead to 31-16.
Phelan punched the Cowboys' third touchdown into the end zone late in the third period. The two-point conversion failed and Cedaredge led 31-22.
One more score from Phelan, his third, was augmented with his two-point conversion, leaving the Cowboys one point shy of a tie at 31-30.
