After getting off to a terrific start early in the week, the Lady Bruin basketball team ended the week with a split in 3A WSL games. Cedaredge won its week's opening game against Gunnison, 59-33, on Dec. 10.
Later in the week, playing in Olathe, the Lady Bruins were handed their first loss of the season in a 53-40 setback to the Pirates.
The split last week has the Lady Bruins holding a 1-1 league mark and a 2-1 overall record.
CHS 59, Gunnison 33
For just the second time in 11 years, Cedaredge was able to defeat a Gunnison High School girl's basketball team. The final score is a fair assessment of how the game went.
A 13-9 start gave Cedaredge fans hope for a victory early in the game. When the Lady Bruins rolled to a 24-4 run in the second period, the rout was on.
Cedaredge continued to dominate in second-half play with quarters of 15-13 and 11-7 to produce a 59-33 decision.
Kenzie Kehmeier was Cedaredge's leading offensive player with 15 points while Bree Gutierrez chipped in another 11 counters to give the Lady Bruins a pair of players in double-figure scoring. Sophomore Nellie Freeman was close to double digits with eight points.
Cedaredge was in constant motion on defense forcing numerous turnovers that were converted to easy points throughout the game.
With a home win, new coach Ryan Hilbig shared his thoughts on the win. "It's exciting to show what this team is capable of and we're hoping to get more fans in the gym to watch this new brand of basketball in Cedaredge."
Olathe 53, CHS 40
The expectations in Olathe on Thursday were the same as on Tuesday against Gunnison for the Lady Bruins. However, Olathe is known as a tough home-court opponent and it refused to allow Cedaredge to get a foothold with its offense. Instead, Olathe defended its home court by outscoring the Lady Bruins in every quarter except the fourth.
Cedaredge was well within striking distance after a 13-6 first quarter run by the Pirates.
Olathe kept the pressure on in the second period and took a 30-17 halftime lead after outscoring the Lady Bruins 17-11 in the second stanza.
Cedaredge was flat in the third quarter and Olathe took advantage of that offensive lapse to post a 12-4 advantage for a 42-21 lead heading into the final period of play.
The Lady Bruins rallied for 19 points in the final eight minutes while their defense gave up just 11 points. Unfortunately for the Lady Bruins, it was too little too late with Olathe holding on for the 13-point win.
Freeman collected 15 points to lead Cedaredge's offense and Alyssa Isaman chipped in another 12 points to give the Lady Bruins two double-digit scorers for the game.
Cedaredge was in Aspen on Tuesday (Dec. 17) and will conclude its 2013 portion of its hoops schedule with play in this weekend's First Colorado National Bank Basketball Tournament beginning on Friday.
The Lady Bruins will open tournament play with a match-up with Paonia's Lady Eagles at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon (Dec. 20). The winner of this game will play the winner of the Delta and Hotchkiss contest to be played at 6 p.m. on Friday. Losers play at 3 p.m. on Saturday.blog comments powered by Disqus
