The 2013 track and field season was a successful one for Delta High School. Six new school records fell, some more than once, during the 2013 track season.
Four individual marks were established along with two new relay standards for the boys' 1600m and girls' 3200m relay races.
Beginning with the lower distance races, Skylyn Webb set the new Delta High School 200m record at 25.81. Webb posted the time in preliminary time trials at this year's Western Slope League Meet in Grand Junction on May 11. Webb went on to run the 200m at state where she placed ninth with a time of 25.98.
Clarissa Whiting put her name on the record-board at DHS with a time of 5:09.10 in the 1600m run. The win was her personal best and came in the Class 4A State Championships in May.
Cleo Whiting added her name to the list of records by turning in a time of 11:14.18 (qualifying time of 11:16.63) in the 3200m run at this year's 2013 Class 4A State Championships in Lakewood. She finished third in the race.
Delta's 3200m relay team broke this record several times in the course of the 2013 season. The existing record (9:44.63) was set by this year's team which was made up of Clarissa Whiting, Mykayla Music, Skylyn Webb and Cleo Whiting. The team's new record shaved nearly 12 seconds off the old time with a new mark of 9:32.92, and came in the 2013 Class 4A State Championships where they finished fourth. Delta had qualified sixth in a field of 18.
Chris Black was dominant in his pursuit of excellence in the 300m hurdles. He was a top-10 qualifier in the state's 4A ranks with a time of 38.85 that came at the Montrose Invitational on April 26. His 38.85 was a new mark that would not remain for long and placed him sixth in a field of 18.
Black's preliminary heat in the Class 4A State Championships produced a new school mark of 38.80. In the finals, Black set a new mark once again with a time of 38.62 and a fourth-place finish in state competition.
Zach Decker, Dustin Ownbey, Black and Douglas Hawkins combined talents to produce the last school record for 2013. The fleet foursome set the new DHS record for the 1600m relay with a time of 3:28.40.blog comments powered by Disqus
