Last Friday, Delta's Panthers fell to Montrose's Indians in Montrose by a score of 38-24. The final score was no indication of Montrose's domination early in the game.
A pair of turnovers vaulted Montrose to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
The Panthers played inspired football in the second half and nearly pulled off a major upset.
Mike Rocha polished off Montrose's first scoring drive with a 1-yard run early in the first quarter. Ryan Whiteside presented the Indians with their first gift of the game when he was hit hard after receiving a first-down pass from quarterback Cade Gafford.
Montrose's defense got some help again late in the first period when Derek Horn coughed up the football on an end run. Kameron DeVincentis scooted the final four yards from his quarterback position to give the Indians a 14-0 lead following the extra-point kick from Lucas Ruiz-Diaz at the 9:43 mark of the period.
Rocha added another score on a seven-yard run before the half. A missed extra point left the Indians with 20 points.
Delta put seven points on the board before halftime with a 22-yard scoring toss from Gafford to sophomore Kory Mills. Jonney Ponce booted the extra point for a 20-7 Montrose lead.
DeVincentis tacked on another touchdown for Montrose to begin scoring in the third quarter. Pete Shearer ran the ball into the end zone for a two-point conversion and a 28-7 lead.
A 29-yard field goal by Ruiz-Diaz made the score 31-7. Delta picked up a safety in the third period when the Indians' long snapper sailed the ball over punter Gavin Brown's head and through the end zone.
Delta scored the next two touchdowns on passes of five and 27 yards to Whiteside. Whiteside caught a two-point conversion pass from Gafford to pull the Panthers to within a touchdown at 31-24.
The Indians got the defense it needed to stop Delta and Rocha scored from four yards out to make the final score 38-24 with Ruiz-Diaz's PAT kick.
Rocha finished the night with three touchdowns and DeVincentis scored twice to lead the scoring parade for Montrose. Nick Foster had 135 yards on 11 carries while Rocha toted the pigskin 23 times for 87 yards. Shearer had 108 yards on 16 carries.
Delta's ground game was led by Ponce's 60 yards on 12 carries. Horn finished with 21 yards on nine carries.
In the passing department, Gafford threw the ball 20 times and completed nine passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns.
DeVincentis was six of 13 for the Indians for 92 yards.
Whiteside had five receptions for 50 yards to lead the Panthers' passing attack. Shearer had four catches and 42 yards for the Indians.
