Head wrestling coach at Delta High School, Clayton Curtis, is faced with a few late arrivals for practice sessions. The Panthers' football team extended its season three weeks, and several athletes are just now working to get in shape for a tough season.
The number of wrestlers on this year's roster is 35. The senior class includes six wrestlers, with junior and freshman classes practicing 10 each, while the sophomore class has nine athletes on the roster.
Curtis will be assisted by Tyler Morfitt, Kyle Morfitt, Nathan Trujillo, Rudy Fantin and Randy Fantin. This staff has been together for some time.
Two Panthers return for the 2013-14 season who attended state last season. Those wrestlers are Marcus Garcia (HWT) and David Brown (113).
When asked about top performers for the coming season, Curtis noted, "There are several wrestlers that could break the lineup and perform very well at the varsity level."
The list of those expected to be top performers early include David Brown (120), Ty Cordova, Derek Horn (152), Kory Mills (182/170), Cordell Stroud (170/182) and Alejandra Medina (195).
The actual team roster has not been set with wrestle-off competition taking place last Saturday, Nov. 30. That roster list will be revealed later.
Delta hopes to be in the thick of things when post-season action arrives. "Our goal is to be in the top three at regionals and in the top 10 at state," says Curtis.
Delta commences its season this Thursday (Dec. 5) as it hosts Montrose in dual competition beginning at 6 and 7 p.m.
The Panthers are at Colorado Mesa University this Saturday for a series of duals beginning at 8 a.m. Delta is one of several teams attending the dual competition.blog comments powered by Disqus
