Eagles boys post on-the-road loss, win

b07 phsbbbPhoto by Tracy Sturgis Paonia freshman Francisco “Franny” Lopez attempts two from the paint in Paonia’s 63-51 win over the North Park Wildcats. The Paonia Eagles are now 3-8 overall, 1-3 in the 2A Western Slope league after splitting two games on the road last weekend.

Paonia was outscored by 11 points in the second half in its 61-51 loss against West Grand (5-6, 2-2).

Taylor Walters, Jason Sturgis, Josiah Spano and Lane Clawson all scored in double digits in the loss.

On Saturday, Paonia scored 20 points in the final period to defeat North Park, 63-51.

Walters was 8 of 15 in field goal attempts for a team-high 16 points. Spano scored 15 points and shot 4-5 from the line, and Sturgis added 14, including two three-pointers.

Eric Carney and Clawson combined for 15 points. Paonia had just 13 turnovers for the game, and Sturgis made six of the team's 17 game steals.

Paonia will face Vail Christian (8-3, 3-1, 1A WSL) at home, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Eagles travel to Vail Mountain (1-8, 1-3, 2A WSL) Saturday.

Next week, the Eagles will host a make-up game against Rifle (3-8, 1-6, 4A WSL) on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
